the device cannot be used to sense an object’s backside

From Reach Out and Touch Somebody—by Laser article on haptic feedback using laser range finders.

However, haptic feedback would also provide a useful interaction method for handlheld augmented reality. Imagine getting haptic feedback when you stroke or (at least) poke an AR character with a virtual stick. When it comes to haptic feedback from AR content - you would be able to sense an object’s backside; and I’m sure some people would want to too.
