it would take more than five years just to watch the amount of video that will cross global Internet-Protocol (IP) networks every second in 2015

More interesting predictions for 2015 in the Cisco Systems annual Visual Networking Index (VNI) report (pdf):

  • By 2012 Internet video will account for over 50 percent of consumer Internet traffic
  • Traffic from wireless devices will exceed traffic from wired devices by 2015
  • The number of devices connected to IP networks will be twice as high as the global population in 2015
  • Globally, mobile data traffic will increase 26 times between 2010 and 2015
  • Mobile video traffic will exceed 50 percent for the first time in 2011
  • The top 1 percent of mobile data subscribers generate over 20 percent of mobile data traffic
  • Average smartphone usage doubled in 2010
  • Smartphones represent only 13 percent of total global handsets in use today, but they represent over 78 percent of total global handset traffic
  • Android approaches iPhone levels of data use
  • 3 million tablets were connected to the mobile network, and each tablet generated 5 times more traffic than the average smartphone
