Over thousands of years of domestication dogs appear to have evolved the ability to read human emotions; utilising “left gaze bias”, a skill that they share only with humans. Left gaze bias is the tendency of humans to look to the left when looking at another human face, i.e. the right-hand-side of the person’s face. A recent study suggests that this side of the face expresses more emotion, more accurately than the left. (Which is a little odd if you ask me because it’s the right side of the brain that is largely responsible for emotion and also controlling the left side of a face.)
