As people get ill with flu they search Google for health information. Google Flu Trends uses Google Trends and US flu-related searches to provide daily estimates of flu cases in the US that can reveal outbreaks faster than US Centers for Disease Control’s weekly flu statistics. Looks like someone did something similar a few years ago using conversations in the news groups. See New Scientist article for a little more information.
