Video Sniffing
Video Sniffing is picking up signals broadcast by wireless CCTV networks (e.g. in shops and shopping centres) using a cheap video receiver. By law if you are captured on CCTV you have a right to a copy of the footage; therefore you can use your CCTV’d environment as your set with no outlay on cameras. The pre-set camera angles, varying image quality and lack of sound provide a very distinctive (and limited) style.
Mediashed video sniffing
An art film made exclusively from CCTV is Faceless. Again, having to be overdubbed and the faces of everyone except the actors blanked out shaped the storyline somewhat. Here’s a direct link to the Faceless trailer because the web site player link seems flakey. It’s produced under the rules of the ‘Manifesto for CCTV Filmmakers’. Yeah, whatever.
