The Vampire Diaries’ marketing campaign uses an augmented-reality mirror by Inwindow Outdoor which magically turns you into a vampire by removing your reflection from the live scene.

How it’s done:

Looks like it’s using some face recognition to add thought bubbles and direct the animation of the crow. To affect the vampire transformation they switch from the camera pointing at the subjects to one positioned above and behind them looking in the same direction. This requires the flash of light to obscure the change in camera perspective. Go to 59 seconds into the video to see the change in camera views (watch the pillar on the left). Cunningly simple!
