Awesome augmented reality for non-rigid surfaces by Julien Pilet, Vincent Lepetit and Pascal Fua, at the Computer Vision Lab, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland.

From their page on deformable surface 3D tracking it sounds like their software matches the marker by combining a set of ‘local deformation models’, each trained on a small set of training data, to form surfaces of arbitrary shapes in realtime. Guess they have a grunty PC behind this.
