Getting new content to a mobile-based AR system either requires a wired data connection to a PC or a wireless connection. Both of these can be far from ideal - a PC connection cannot be done on the fly and wireless data connections can cost a lot. The ability to provide information through the camera is one way forward.
This demo of ‘in-place augmented reality’ is particularly neat (if you skip the boring bits) because the data is presented in a human-understandable format that makes sense without AR. A lot could be done using these techniques, such as providing new textures or content for released games.
